ARLINGTON - Tuesday morning, City Council candidates crowded the foyer of the Arlington City Secretary’s office, anxiously awaiting the drawing for positions on May’s ballot. Nineteen candidates have filed for contested seats in this year’s City Council race.
Some candidates were absent due to the Arlington Board of Realtors hosting their interviews for candidate endorsements which were taking place at the same time.
When asked if he was hoping for a spot near the top of his race, District 1 candidate Karl Warren replied, “I would like to, but it’s not the important thing. We’ll work with what we get.” Warren faces seven opponents in his race.
“My understanding is that being first may be worth as much as five points,” joked Ben Bruce, another District 1 candidate.
Promptly at 10:00, City Secretary Mary Supino greeted everyone and steered the candidates into a conference room. Once seated, names were drawn for each district. The final listings can be found below or on the Secretary’s website.
Candidate Faith Chatham was drawn for the first spot in the District 8. “Since I got number 1, it would be difficult to be unhappy with that. I’m just honored to be on the ballot. I’m interested in the outcome of this election being a bridge builder.”
With eight individuals vying for the District One seat, topping the list of candidates can’t hurt. Mike Becknal, the first candidate to file in the race for District 1 after details of Mel Leblanc’s drug investigation went public, won the top position. “I’m excited,” said Becknal. “I’ve heard that being at the top of the ballot is a plus, but I don’t necessarily want to get votes because I’m at the top of the ballot.”
Drawing for positions on the ballot is a quick and easy process. The real work begins with the long process of candidate forums, questionnaires, and interviews. Four forums are already scheduled in the next three weeks. The first, sponsored by the Arlington Tea Party, is scheduled for Thursday, March 15 at 7 PM.
While at the City Secretary’s office, the Arlington Voice briefly interviewed each candidate. You can listen to their 30-second responses below.
